November 2016 - Local Outreach Reading Tour in Mt. Washington Valley
Character Outreach Reading Program – Local Tour focused on Mt. Washington Valley
INTERVALE, NH – Believe in Books Literacy Foundation has completed their “Local” Books in Character Outreach Reading Program Tour. This tour began October 31, 2016 and ran through November 4, 2016, visiting schools, and Head-Start Programs in the Mt. Washington Valley, reaching hundreds of children in the area. This tour was partnered with Story Land Amusement Park as they provided their mascot, Duke the Dinosaur to share dance moves with the children and as we read, Saturday Night At The Dinosaur Stomp by Caroll Diggory Shields. The Books in Character program promotes literacy in all children bringing their favorite characters to life in the classrooms.
With several tours planned throughout the school year, Believe in Books Literacy Foundation provides new books to the children with each visit, and a reader brings the book to life while the character interacts with the students. The end result is to bring a passion for reading, an interest in story-telling, and to get a book into the hands and hearts of children and families alike, all while encouraging the young child’s creative mind.
“It was awesome to Partner with Story Land and provide students an opportunity to meet Duke the Dinosaur up close and personal. We learned dance moves and turned our visits into a movement activity as we read a book about what dinosaurs do for fun!” says Andrea Caron, Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator at Believe in Books. Caron organizes the Books in Character Outreach Reading Program and is already planning more tours for the new school year.
The North Conway Rotary Club is a sponsor of this program as they generously supported the purchase of some of the books for the year. Thanks to the help from the dedicated volunteers, BIBLF is able to offer this program to the schools to create a fun literacy program for each classroom.
The mission of BIBLF is to advance healthy development of young minds through literacy programs that encourage early reading, imagination, and physical activity.
For more information or to learn more about the program, please contact Andrea Caron at 603-356-9980 or andrea@believeinbooks.org.

January 2015 - Believe in Books Literacy Foundation Hosts Successful Storybook Snowshoe Series
(Intervale, NH January 2015) – The first annual Storybook Snowshoe Series hosted by Believe in Books Literacy Foundation was a huge success with over 45 participants one Saturday. Families from all over the North Country gathered at the Theater in the Wood to head out for a Storybook Snowshoe adventure. The goal of the brand new Storybook Snowshoe Series event which took place on Saturdays in January was to get families outside and reading on the Trails in the Wood.
“I just wanted to thank you guys for such a wonderful snowshoe adventure Saturday morning. It was my 2 year-old's first time on snow shoes, so I really had no idea how it would go. The healthy snacks, the great snowshoes, the characters who were there, the enthusiasm of staff and other families, the storybook trail.... it was all so perfect! I cannot imagine a better way to spend a Saturday morning! We plan to be back this Saturday if you have the space. Thank you so much!!” said an enthusiastic mom, Susie.
The Storybook Snowshoe Series included fruit and gluten free muffins from Peace of Mind Baking Company to start, a quick snowshoe tutorial, a guided tour on the half mile Storybook Trail with a new exciting story every week, and an hour to roam free on the 100 Acre Wood Trail System. Although the Storybook Trail is intended for a younger reading level, this event was enjoyed by all ages.
The 100 Acre Wood Trail System features 10K of maintained trails and was developed with the purpose of educational and recreational opportunities. The trails are designed for walking, X-C skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking, maple sugaring, and nature observation. You can take a walk with snowshoes or ski on our Storybook Trail and experience great children’s stories in a unique way. It’s a wonderful way for families to read and play together, exercising the mind and body. Believe in Books Literacy Foundation feels that early exposure to simple outdoor activity in a family setting will encourage lifelong healthy habits. Regular trails are open from 9am – 4pm daily.

January 2015 - "Books in Character" Outreach Reading Series Visits 57 Schools
(Intervale, NH January 2015) - Believe in Books Literacy Foundation continued its “Books in Character” outreach reading program in February with visits to 57 preschools, kindergartens, and Head Starts, in the North Country reaching over 1500 households. The Foundation arrived with a larger than life Winnie the Pooh, read corresponding interactive books with the children, and then presented each child with a brand new book to take home with them. The Foundation repeats this circuit four to five times a year, and helps children build libraries of their own at home. "Books in Character" is setting up to head out on the road again for three weeks in March with an all-around favorite, Cat in the Hat. This program thrives with the help of volunteers, and is always seeking new participants to help read or dress up in character.
Well known for its “Journey to the North Pole” Polar Express fundraising event, Believe in Books Literacy Foundation organizes and hosts a variety of free programs for children, families and schools as well. As the result of over twenty years of fundraising efforts, the Literacy Foundation has given over 2 million dollars in literacy programs, scholarships, grants and book distributions in Northern New Hampshire and Western Maine. October 2014 - "Super Hero Buddy Bash" Hosted in the 100 Acre Wood
(Intervale, NH – October, 2014) Jackson Runs is putting on its first annual “Superhero Buddy Bash” 5k in the 100 acre Wood in Intervale, NH, on Saturday, November 1st from 9am – 12pm. Costumes are optional, but they make it more fun! Registration, warm up, and family fun begins at 9am and the race starts at 10am. Early registration prices are $10 per person and $15 per buddy pair. Day of the race prices are $15 per person and $20 per buddy pair. In addition to the 5k walk/run/soar the “Superhero Buddy Bash” will provide wellness activities and family fun. To register for the race please visit www.believeinbooks.org.
Jackson Runs is a recently established after school program promoting running, wellness, and healthy habits. The group mostly consists of parents and students from the Jackson Grammar School and is also open to the public, created with a team goal of running a 5k together and spreading the underlying message that “gratitude grows.” Believe in Books Literacy Foundation is hosting the “Superhero Buddy Bash” and helping to organize the event. With their assistance the group hopes to reach more potential supporters.
The idea of the “Superhero Buddy Bash” started when members of Jackson Runs realized that they had a community of heroes that they would like to thank for being a part of their lives. The heroes are members of the community that the group admires; doctors, police officers, teachers or anyone important in their lives. The group’s children will be inviting special buddies and heroes to come and run/walk/soar with them in their 5k race in the 100 Acre Wood where The Believe in Books Literacy Foundation is located. The group is inviting all of the heroes that they admire in the community to come join them on November 1st so they can thank them for all that they do. In fact, they’d like to invite anyone who has a hero or who may be someone’s hero to grab a buddy and join them in the fun!
To support their message of “gratitude grows” Jackson Runs will donate 100% of the proceeds from this event to three charities this year: The Conway Area Humane Society, CASA of NH, and The Bartlett/Jackson Food Pantry.

January 2015 - Polar Express Success in it's 20th Season
(Intervale, NH January 2015) - This season’s 20th annual Polar Express Fundraising Event for Believe in Books Literacy Foundation was a huge success raising funds to support Literacy in Northern NH and Western ME.
In December of 1995, in North Conway, the Polar Express Event first reenacted the award-winning book by Chris Van Allsburg. The Polar Express continues to enchant the masses; this two-hour holiday journey includes a train ride, an enchanting walk to the North Pole Theater where visitors are greeted by a sea of cheering elves, a retelling of the story, and a visit from Santa himself. Many families arrive dressed in pajamas and board the train where they are met by Chefs who serve them hot cocoa and Santa’s favorite chocolate treat. In North Conway, guests board at the Conway Scenic Railroad, and in Lincoln boarding is at the Hobo Railroad.
Since the event’s inception, the Polar Express has brought hundreds of thousands of people to the “North Pole” where they could experience the magic of this holiday event. This journey continues to be successful because of the dedication of community volunteers, supporting businesses, and partners, the most notable being the Conway Scenic Railroad, a key partner from the beginning. Believe in Books Literacy Foundation is exceedingly thankful for their ongoing support and encouragement.
The event is organized and presented by the Believe in Books Literacy Foundation and is its largest fundraiser. The Foundation engages over 1500 families and 54 area preschools in Northern New Hampshire and Western Maine, and has gifted over $2 million through literacy programs, scholarships, grants and book distributions. By 2014, tens of thousands of books have been distributed by the Foundation.
